St. Ignace, MI

August 2nd the Rolling Rally traveled 180 miles St. Ignace...we'll be here six days. The campground is lakefront and we enjoyed the sunset the first evening. Jack and Sarah saw the "green flash" as the sun set.
An elf has constructed a labyrinth out of lake rocks, we successfully completed walking through it...really good karma for us.

Friday sightseeing was a ferry to Mackinac Island. The boat took us under the Mackinac Bridge, a five mile suspension bridge that marks the division between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.  With five ferry companies taking tourists to the island every 30 minutes you can imagine how crowed the town is.... thousands of people, hundreds of bicycles, many, many horse-drawn carriages. Fortunately no motor-driven vehicles are allowed on the island. We had our bikes and immediately got out of town to pedal the eight mile perimeter of the island. We were joined by many of our new friends!

The island is famous for the Grand Hotel and Fort Mackinac....and of course, 17 fudge shops for the tourists. The island has incredible natural beauty just too many tourists. www.mackinacParks.com

Returning to the mainland on the ferry, we biked the town of St. Ignace...there is a lovely boardwalk along the waterfront that includes a lighthouse. It is lively town with lots of fun for the tourists.

Saturday Jack and I drove south over the Mackinac Bridge...we found the Tunnel of Trees, a 20 mile drive along the shore of Lake Michigan. Trees so thick we could barely see the water. It led us to Harbor Springs a Victorian village....humongous yachts in the marina, upscale shops but only three fudge shops for the tourists.
Last visit of the day was to  the town of Petoskey, it is across Little Traverse Bay from Harbor Springs. A highlight was the beautiful Waterfront Park. The town provides a trolley to take visitors into town to shop or dine so we got the tour and the local scoop.  We ate regional fish in an historic pub.
